Broke And Broker

Sometimes, when you’re getting broker every day, it helps to sing your way through your troubles.

Anybody got any favorite songs for hard times? Songs that never fail to cheer you, to make you feel a sense of camaraderie with all the other poor chumps out there?

I’m stuck today singing, “Even though we ain’t got money, I’m so in love with you, honey, everything will bring a chain of love…..”

Yeah, I’m sappy like that. How about you? Shoot me your best song in the comment section and let’s all hum a few bars together!!

  2. Hey Katy, "The sun'll come out, tomorrow, bet you bottom that tomorrow they'll be sun..." and also"Raindrops on yoses and whiskers on kittens..." Other things that work - watch a great old three kleenex movie, you can cry and no one is the wiser. Works for me everytime. Of courrse the best thing to do is remember that verse "..this too shall pass..." and "I know the plans that I have for you, plans for good and not for evil..."

  3. oops, that's "bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow..." I hate when that happens. and of course. "Raindrops on Roses.." If I ever tried to write a book, my poor proof reader would run out of ink!!

  4. Suzan--Is that a real song? Because it should be!!

Sandi--Great tunes! Thanks for the cheer. Then there's "All I want is a room somewhere, far away from the cold night air, with one enormous chair, oh wouldn't it be loverly?" OK, now I'm singing! I'm also wearing my bracelet with the Scripture about God's plans for me engraved on it....

  5. Katy, Great songs, too. See what a little brainstorming does? How about "Heavenly sunshine, heavenly sunshine, flooding my so with glory divine..." None of us knows where this will lead, but we both know who holds our future in His hands. If it means we work and harder for longer, we know that He will give us the strength to do so. Hang in there!

  6. Over the Rhine has a song called Etcetera Whatever, and the chorus says "We don't need a lot of money, we'll be sleeping on the beach, keeping oceans within reach. Whatever private oceans we can conjure up for free. I will stumble there with you, and you'll be laughing close with me, trying not to make a scene, etcetera whatever, I guess all I really mean is we're gonna be alright. Yah we're gonna be alright. You can close your eyes tonight, 'cause we're gonna be alright." ..... and VOL has a song called "Eart Has No Sorrow Heaven Can't Heal" ... they're both slow ones rather than cheery ones, but they do make me feel good. And I also love Danny's Song, especially this one bootleg I have of Andrew Peterson and his wife and kids and their friend Gabe Scott all performing it, and it's soooo sweet.

  7. I always think of "here comes the sun... it's alright..." because no matter how dark things seem, the sun always rises and I know it will all work out somehow. plus, i have it on pretty good authority that HE has me in the palm of His hand and is not planning on letting me go anytime soon.

  8. This may seem strange, but I'll usually sing one of the saddest slave spirituals I've ever heard, one of the few that has not a ray of hope in it.

"Lord, how come me here? 3X
I wish I never was born."

Because whenever I sing that, I'm reminded that my circumstances are kingly and my blessings abound, however low I might feel at that moment, when compared to the man or woman whose soul birthed those words.

But I like your song, too, Katy!

  9. You can never go wrong with...
Lean on Me...Dream Big (by Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band)...or anything at all by James Taylor!

  10. Well okay, in light of the debates and my current opinion on all US politics, politicians, and the state of the economy,
"You 'ain't nothing but a houndog..." is about the only thing that comes to mind.
Sorry. ;0) And just for you, I'll sing "The Road is long...with many a winding turn, that leads us to who knows where...who knows where..." Of course I have to change it to sister and lightning might strike me dead...
    I don't think I'm helping.
