So What Do You Suppose It Means When Your Entire BOOK Flashes Before Your Eyes?

If you’ve had a near-death experience, you may have had your whole life flash before your eyes. My younger sister, after a dreadful surgery, actually had her on-the-brink life appear in snippets, each tiny still-life contained in a fragment of a rapidly turning kaleidescope.

I’ve never had that happen, several near-death experiences notwithstanding. But last night, after shipping a hard copy of my finished book off to my agent (and after Doug took me out to a fantastic steak place to celebrate), I fell into a fitful sleep. All through the night, each and every scene of my story flashed before my eyes.

There are maybe 100 scenes in the book, and I swear I saw them play out in order. Very bizarre.

Any guesses what THAT might mean? Please do not respond if you’re inclined to believe that the interpretation is the likely near-death experience of my future in publishing.  :)

All that to say that I’m thrilled beyond words to have gotten this far, and grateful for the constant encouragement my fallible friends have faithfully shared.

Thank you, one and all!!

  2. Not to worry, Katy. Dreams are usually metaphoric in nature. My guess is that since saw all of the scenes in your book play out before your eyes, it is a metaphor for finally “seeing” your dreams—taking a huge step toward being published—come to fruition.
Either that or you just ate too much during the celebratory dinner, and your overworked digestive tract prevented you from finding a peaceful rest. ;-)

  3. Way to go, Katy!! I’m so happy for you. I’d say that dream simply means that your book is so incredibly well written and plotted that it would make a terrific movie! : )

Keep us posted! I’m envisioning great things for you!

  4. I’ve had weird dreams about my books too. I doubt it means anything more than that you’re a writer ... which means you’ve got an active imagination, awake or asleep.

Congrats on sending off the book!

  5. After a near-death experience and seeing the life flashage, don’t many people go on to live more vibrant and fulfilling lives?

You were simply letting your book go out into the big world, and making room to concentrate on new books and blogs and other writings now that this one is all wrapped up. Live the vibrant writer’s life!

  6. Ah, the agony and the ecstasy ( I’m so old, I remember when that wasn’t a drug reference). Trying not to play tug-of-war with the post office lady as she placed her hands around my carefully wrapped manuscript was almost as difficult as dropping off my oldest on his first school day.

Well done, girlie. Glad to be on the train with you!

  7. Katy, don’t you know it means that they’re going to make your book into a movie??
Come on! Actually I’m surprised you slept. I sent my book off a few weeks ago and I don’t think I’ve slept well since.
My dreams have more to do with the grim reaper coming after me with his scythe for daring to write such drivel.
They alternate with the one of me being on Oprah after they make MY book into a movie.
What can I say? I’m insane.

  8. Suzan--I want YOUR book!!!! Can’t wait.

Kathryn--Well, you’ve encouraged me. In general, I’m not much of a visionary. Don’t succeed in “seeing” my dreams come to fruition, but that doesn’t mean I don’t pound away at those dreams. And I will gladly accept your interpretation of my dream!  :) Of course, the garlic butter on the steak could be responsible....

Deb--Your belief in me has kept me moving forward!! I appreciate it so much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Robin--Actually, in my sleep I am VERY Stephen Kingesque. DEFINITELY NOT a member of the Big Honkin’ Chicken Club by night!!! But then, after an exhausting night life, I don’t WANT to write (or read) that kind of stuff by day. By day, my imaginations tends more toward nutty characters who get involved in off-the-wall situations, with humor and pathos both, of course.  :)

Patty T--Yes!!! Vibrant and fulfilling lives!!! I am holding onto those words, girl. Very inspiring!

Christa--It is a STRANGE and somewhat disturbing feeling to put it in the post. It made me a believer in “Sender’s Remorse.” I’m not sure I’ve ever read that term before, but whether I invented it or not, it is a real disturbance!

Cathy--I did not know that you’d sent off a book also! Good for you. I hope you start getting some sleep, because you will need to be well-rested, from what I hear, should it come time to do those editor-assigned revisions!  :)

  9. Maybe you were Prophesying. I get those once in awhile.

People in their daily lives would think they were there before, but really it was a dream they had.

    That is so cool.

  10. Well, I believe in these things.  I “knew” that my book would become a reality--but mine was more like a waking vision, and I attribute it to “something” spiritual
